If you’ve always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, discover new adventures or simply see the wondrous world beneath the waves, this is where it starts. The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba course and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle.
The PADI Open Water Diver Referral course consists of three main phases:
Knowledge Development – Self-study knowledge development and 2 classroom sessions
Confined Water Dives – 5 dives in a pool to learn the basic scuba skills
Open Water Dives – 4 open water dives to put your skills into practice and to have fun
If you’ve tried diving through a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience, the skills you learned may be credited towards a portion of the full PADI Open Water Diver course certification. If you have completed this with us here at Dream Divers within the last 4 weeks we will take your £30 Discover Scuba Diving fee off your PADI Open Water Diver course fee.
Dream Divers will provide all your basic scuba diving equipment, including: mask, snorkel and fins, a buoyancy compensating jacket that also carries your scuba tank, a scuba regulator to breathe from, instrumentation to monitor depth and air supply, a wetsuit for pool use and drysuit and undersuit to keep you warm during your open water dives.
PADI offers a variety of home-study materials for the Open Water Diver course. The most
popular method of self-study is the PADI Touch which installs onto your tablet and is fully interactive with videos and tutorials to help you learn in the easiest way. Download the “PADI Library by PADI Americas, Inc” for a demo version of the PADI Open Water Diver touch materials.
Don’t worry, if you don’t have a tablet or iPad there is either the PADI Open Water Ultimate crew pack which includes the manual and DVD or your PADI eLearning which is fully web based theory. For each concept or skill in the course you’ll read a description, then watch a video or demonstration to ensure that you fully understand. At the end of each section there is a knowledge review (5 in total) which you need to fill out and complete before coming to the classroom sessions.
The PADI Open Water Diver Course can be completed with in conjunction with the PADI Drysuit Diver and PADI Nitrox Diver. If you want to continue to scuba dive in the UK and plan on renting cold water scuba equipment, including a drysuit, you will require a PADI Drysuit Diver certification. We offer both of these courses as upgrade options while completing your Open Water course. These are as follows:
PADI Drysuit Diver £95 – Includes one additional drysuit dive, manual and certification fee.
PADI Enriched Air Nitrox Diver £95 – Includes combined nitrox dives, manual and certification fee.

The theory is split into two sections and is designed to teach you the basic principles of scuba diving theory, equipment, skills and dive planning. The two areas are self-study knowledge development where you will use one of the PADI Open Water Diver training materials, and classroom based reviews where you show your PADI Instructor that you have mastered all the theory. This is also the time where you will practice assembling and dis-assembling your dive gear for the first time.
You will make at least 5 confined water dives which will be completed in our two training pools. Your first dives will be in a shallow water pool with a sloping bottom so that you can build your skills underwater in a safe and fun environment. Once you have completed the shallow pool dives we will take you to our 5.5m diver training pool. During the next couple of sessions you will learn more skills that are essential for all dives you will make once you are a certified diver. You will also have a session with your PADI Instructor to orientate you on the use of a drysuit before making your open water dives.
You will make 4 open water dives where you will show your PADI Instructor that you have mastered all the skills and are now confident to complete them in actual diving situations. The open water dives are completed to a maximum of 12m for dive one and two and 18m for dives three and four. You will dive at either Capernwray or Stoney Cove for these dives. When you book we will let you know the specific details regarding dates, times and locations
During your course we will include all essential dive gear to make sure you can develop your skills to the highest possible level and ensure safety throughout. You will be required to collect your essential items of equipment prior to the open water training dives from Dream Divers. These rental items are included FREE of charge as you are on a course with us and include:
